Frequently Asked Questions
How long will a dodger last?
A Berkeley Marine Canvas dodger built with darker Sunbrella fabric—like Captain Navy—will often last 15 years or more, especially if you take care of it. We use the same proven methods and materials as Cover Craft, and we’ve seen their dodgers last over 20 years on actively sailed, well-maintained boats.
Lifespan depends on a few things:
Color: Darker Sunbrella fabrics last the longest. Lighter colors generally last 5 to 10 years, depending on exposure.
Maintenance: Rinse your dodger thoroughly (inside and out) with fresh water after sailing, lube the fasteners and zippers, and avoid harsh chemicals or experimental cleaning methods. Always install window covers at the dock, and keep chafe away from the dodger.
Careful use: Chafe, oily or sunscreen-laden hands, chemical exposure, and fastener corrosion are the biggest threats. We add handrails and chafe strips where you’ll grab or lean, but it’s good seamanship to be reasonably careful around the canvas.
Cleanliness: Don’t let mildew or algae get started. Keep the dodger clean and dry when possible.
With regular care and a bit of attention, your dodger should last well over a decade.
How long will a sail cover last?
A sail cover made with a dark color of Sunbrella marine fabric will usually last 15+ years, sometimes longer if you take care of it.
We use the same proven methods and materials as Cover Craft, and we’ve seen their sail covers last 15-20 years for darker Sunbrella colors. Regular rinsing, keeping it clean, and avoiding harsh chemicals go a long way. If you notice chafe, fading, or other wear, we’re always happy to advise on repairs or maintenance.
Why do darker colors of Sunbrella last longer?
Darker colors of Sunbrella fabric, like Captain Navy, last longer because they contain more pigment and UV inhibitors. This extra pigment helps the fibers resist breakdown from sunlight. Lighter colors have less pigment, so the sunlight damages the structural fibers much faster than it otherwise would.
If you want the longest-lasting canvas, we recommend choosing a darker color.
How do I clean Sunbrella?
Rinse your Sunbrella fabric thoroughly with fresh water after sailing. For routine cleaning, use a mild soap (like Dawn or Ivory) and a soft brush—never harsh chemicals or bleach. Rinse well and let it air dry in the shade.
If you’re dealing with mildew or a stubborn stain, check Sunbrella’s website for their recommended cleaning methods. If you have questions, just ask—we’re always happy to walk you through the process or suggest the right products.
How do I care for and maintain my new dodger or sail cover?
We give all customers a printed and digital Dodger Maintenance Guide and a maintenance kit when the job is done.
For general covers like sail covers or boat covers, the same care applies:
- Rinse your canvas thoroughly (inside and out) with fresh water after exposure to salt water.
- Lube fasteners and zippers regularly.
- Avoid harsh chemicals or experimental cleaning methods; stick to Sunbrella’s cleaning instructions.
- Don’t let mildew or algae get started.
- Keep the cover clean and dry when possible.
- Be careful with oily or sunscreen-laden hands, and avoid rubbing the canvas in high-wear spots.
- Watch for chafe and make sure any provided chafe-protection is properly placed around the source of chafe.
If you ever need a replacement maintenance kit or have questions about care, just let us know. We’re happy to help keep your canvas in top shape.
What is your unconditional guarantee?
We stand behind our work for the life of the product. If you ever have a problem with workmanship, let us know and we’ll make it right. Sunbrella fabric comes with a 10-year guarantee, and we use only the best brand-name hardware and thread for maximum durability.
This guarantee does not cover usage outside of the reasonable expected use of the cover, does not cover chafe or abuse of the canvas, does not cover DIY repairs, and does not cover owner-supplied materials.
After installation, you’ll get an owner’s manual and a maintenance kit. We’re always available for questions or repairs. Our goal is for your canvas to last as long as possible, and for you to feel confident we’ll stand by our work every step of the way.
How long does it take to get a custom dodger made?
The whole process usually takes a couple of weeks. If your boat is tied up at our dock for the entire project, turnaround time is typically between 1 and 3 weeks. For installations around the Bay Area, timing is similar—usually 2 to 4 weeks depending on the job and logistics.
Please keep in mind, we’re often booked out anywhere from 2 to 6 months, especially during the busy season. We generally can’t build a last-minute dodger, as most customers reserve their spot months ahead. The best bet is to call us to discuss your project. We’ll give you an accurate time estimate based on your boat and our current schedule.
Can you match the existing canvas or hardware on my boat?
Do you travel for installations outside the Bay Area?
Yes, we are currently able to serve California, Oregon, and Washington. If you have a special project and need onsite installation outside the Bay Area, please reach out. Chances are we can make it work. We’re happy to discuss logistics and scheduling for projects anywhere on the West Coast.
What’s the process for getting a quote?
Please call, text, or email us to start the conversation. We like to understand your sailing style and goals before we design and build your dodger or covers. Once we know a bit about your boat and what you’re looking for, we’ll walk you through options, materials, and pricing. You’ll get a clear, straightforward estimate – no surprises.
Do you have a dock space to bring the boat?
Yes, we have dock space available at Berkeley Marine Center for most projects. If you’d like to bring your boat to our dock for the duration of the job, just let us know when you reach out. We’ll coordinate the details and find a time that works for your schedule and ours. If a slip isn’t available, we can most often work at any marina and slip in the Bay Area.
